Diet Tips – Trying to Lose Weight? Beware the “Fat-Free” Label.

You think you are buying healthy choices by buying “low fat” but did you know that you may be sabotaging your weight loss efforts?

Even though consumption of dietary fat has decreased dramatically the incidence of obesity continues to rise today. Today, there are more overweight people than ever before. How come?

“FAT FREE” DOESN’T MEAN SUGAR FREE OR CALORIE FREE”! What has happened is that many people have cut out the fat only to replace it with refined sugar.
Nowadays, even foods that have never contained any fat now have labels saying “no fat”. For example, would you believe that a friend of mine used to eat marshmallows by the packet because it had a huge label saying “fat free” across the top. It never occurred to her that they were 100% sugar and full of calories! The same can be said for quite a few ‘diet’ yogurts. The level of fat is low but wow, check out some of the sugar levels. And remember, there are a lot of types of sugar, for example, corn syrup, glucose, sucrose etc.

A FOOD CAN SAY “FAT FREE” ON THE LABEL AND BE 100% SUGAR! If you eat a lot of sugar which in turn is more calories than you burn, it doesn’t matter if you eat no fat (which, by the way is not healthy) – you will still get fat!

Marketers hope that you don’t take the time to read the food labels and get suckered into purchasing the product because it is low fat. Become label wise and read the ingredients. The first listed ingredient is the highest occurring ingredient in the product, so if the first one listed is sugar, beware the calories!

Don’t be fooled by clever marketing, learn to read labels and make wise choices, your body will thank you for it!
